Chieftaincy Dispute Sparks Gunfire in Nkwanta; Troops Deployed

0

Nkwanta, a town in Oti Region, has once again become a hotspot of violence due to a renewed chieftaincy dispute. The latest outbreak has resulted in heavy gunfire, causing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety. The conflict, rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disagreements, has previously led to significant unrest in the area.

In January 2024, clashes between ethnic groups escalated during a traditional festival, resulting in at least 17 fatalities. Despite efforts to broker peace, including the signing of agreements by traditional leaders, tensions have persisted. In response to the current violence, a combined team of police and military personnel has been swiftly deployed to Nkwanta to restore calm.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting spokesperson for President John Mahama, confirmed that additional troops are being sent to enforce law and order. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and urged the feuding factions to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue. As security forces work to stabilize the situation, residents are hopeful that sustained peace efforts will prevent further violence.
